Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' is a beautiful, deciduous hybrid magnolia that's well-known for its exceptional spring floral display. Its botanical name suggests its hybrid origin, a cross between Magnolia kobus and Magnolia stellata.
The tree grows to a medium size, typically reaching heights of 10-15 feet, though it can sometimes grow larger. It has a spread of about 10 feet as well, giving it a generally rounded shape. Its branches often have a spreading, somewhat open habit.
The 'Leonard Messel' variety is distinguished by its eye-catching, star-shaped flowers. The flowers bloom in early to mid-spring, often before the leaves emerge. Each blossom consists of about 12-15 narrow, strap-like petals. They are pink on the outside and white on the inside, creating a beautiful two-toned effect. The flowers have a lovely fragrance and can be up to 4 inches in diameter.
The leaves are dark green, oblong to elliptical, and grow 3-6 inches long. They turn yellow in the fall, providing some autumn interest.
This magnolia cultivar is hardy and relatively easy to grow. It prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. It's also somewhat tolerant of urban pollution.

Minimum order is $2500 with a $300 minimum freight. Please place order well ahead to allow time for making arrangements. Our responsibility for the plants will cease when they leave our nursery.
